I’ve been contemplating Syria a lot recently and have wondered how the war can be halted. Often I asked myself: ‘are they going to wait until there is no population left to govern’? Half of the population of Syria has been displaced already – I read that somewhere but can’t quite remember where – and they have already killed several hundred thousand people and millions have migrated to other countries seeking a safe harbour. For the life of me, I cannot understand why people elected to govern a country are ready and willing to sacrifice entire populations to achieve their own end.

This simply demonstrates that they care not one whit for the people they govern – the people who elected them in the first place. Slaughtering people in war, especially innocent civilians, in no way constitutes working for the people who elected them to office. That’s wholesale slaughter and murder of innocents.

The cities and towns over which they govern have been reduced to rubble for the most part and infrastructure in many cities and towns has been absolutely demolished. With no end in sight for the current war in Syria, they are also bankrupting the country.

Who, in their right mind, would want to preside over country whose people have been slaughtered or have been forced to leave the country to seek safety elsewhere?  At the helm of Syria are politically corrupt and morally bankrupt people. What twisted and sadistic minds continue down this path until there is nothing left of their country and especially what made their country unique – their people!

It makes no sense whatsoever, at least to this Canadian woman.

It is so very troubling that millions of people are left bereft, not only of their kin, but their homes, possessions, employment, cities and country only to be turned away while fences are being erected in neighbouring countries to keep them out. Where is the humanity here?

For people who sneer at allowing refugees into their countries for the fear a few terrorists may be let in condemn an entire population to death for the sake of a small percentage of men who have lost their own humanity and care not for the sacredness of life. So the ones who declare themselves anti-refugee are willing to allow for the slaughter of an entire population because they fear what may never occur.

They also complain that their own homeless population and poverty-stricken people need to be tended to and helped  first of all but then I stop to wonder how many of these people shouting out this rhetoric actually take even a minute of their time to help someone out who is either homeless or poverty-stricken. Have they even volunteered one hour at a shelter or a food bank or a soup kitchen? Have they went out and bought a hungry person a meal or did they simply throw a few coins their way? And yet they claim that their country must first help their poor and homeless. Who do they think the country is? It’s certainly not just the government – the country is made up of its citizens. So citizens actually have to get off their asses and chip in and help out. If everyone helped out for an hour here and there, the world would see improvement rapidly.

And if these same people would teach their kids to do so as well, the world would change for the better in a very short period of time.

My thoughts!
